What we believe

Living and thriving in Christian community

We believe that our seniors have a right to live and thrive in Christian community. We enable our residents to continue living independently in their homes. We promote their health and wellness. We provide opportunities for our residents to enhance their quality of life while respecting their independence and uniqueness.

When it comes to aging well, we believe seniors need:

  • To be able to count on a stable, safe home in which to live.
  • A community of friends with shared interests.
  • Access to support, services and programming that help them sustain active lifestyles.

01 · Our vision

Supporting seniors matters

In Alberta, the number of people 65 and older is expected to double by 2040. Seniors of today and the future wish, and deserve, to sustain their independence and their choices about where and how to live, and the purpose that comes from contributing to and connecting with others. By providing the appropriate resources and support, we can make this possible.

02 · Our programs

Independence, stability, purpose

The Elim Society centres its work on engaging with the Christian community in Lethbridge, sustaining resident independence, housing stability and purpose in a focused and effective way, and on connecting our residents with local resources.

03 · Our goal

Care in a communal setting

We desire to provide safe, secure and affordable housing with activities that support Christian faith and lifestyle, and to look after seniors in a caring communal setting. Our vision is a variety of facilities, programs and levels of care, as the need and the finances allow.

Our name

Our name

Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters.

Exodus 15:27

Our name, Elim (pronounced “eee lim”), comes from this verse. God’s chosen people had just encountered a barren desert and bitter waters. They were now shown a temporary, but very pleasant place, a respite on the way to the Promised Land. As Christians living in Lethbridge and Southern Alberta, we have found in Elim our resting place after a life well lived, awaiting the Promised Land. We extend Christian principles and lifestyle to all seniors living in our facilities and throughout Lethbridge.

Our history

From a small society to two homes

The Elim Society for Senior Citizen’s Care is a faith-based charity created by Reformed Christian people in Southern Alberta to address the housing needs of their seniors. For 29 years, Balmoral House was the mainstay of the Society. Its success encouraged the development of our second independent living facility, Elim Village.

Today we operate two independent living facilities in Lethbridge: Balmoral House and Elim Village.

  1. Early 1960s

Our Society was first organized by Reformed Christian people in Southern Alberta to address the housing needs of their seniors.

  2. 1969

Incorporated as “Rehoboth Society for Seniors Care”, later renamed “Elim Society for Senior Citizen’s Care”.

  3. 1980

Registered as a charity on October 29, 1980.

  4. 1987

After years of searching for a site and talking with lending institutions, the board purchased Balmoral House in June.

  5. 1992

A fellowship hall was added to Balmoral House, a blessing to its tenants and to other Christian organizations.

  6. 2000

We purchased 5.4 acres of land in North Lethbridge. A variety of site plans followed over the next decade.

  7. 2011–2014

The future planning committee proposed an independent living facility with a congregate living format. The membership accepted it, and we turned the sod in the spring of 2014.

  8. 2015

Elim Village was completed on December 2, 2015, quadrupling our assets and growing us to 17 employees.

  9. 2017

Elim Village reached full occupancy, a milestone we celebrated in December.

  10. 2021

Our bylaws were last amended on June 10, 2021.
